After a hearty breakfast in Haridwar, start your scenic drive in the Himalayas toward Barkot, a charming hill town in the Uttarkashi district. It sits on the banks of the Yamuna River at about 1,220 m elevation.
Your journey takes you through the pleasant foothills of Uttarakhand. You will pass through Dehradun and near the beautiful hill station of Mussoorie, which is known for its cool climate and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Along the way, you can make an optional stop at Kempty Falls. This famous waterfall has mountain streams cascading from a height, surrounded by lush greenery. It’s an excellent spot for photos and a refreshing break.

From Janki Chatti, start your uphill trek of about 6 km through pine forests, streams, and mountain trails towards the sacred Yamunotri Temple. This temple sits at roughly 3,291 m in the Garhwal Himalayas and is dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna.
When you reach Yamunotri, take darshan at the temple and visit the nearby Surya Kund. This natural hot spring is where pilgrims usually take a holy dip and may cook rice or potatoes in the thermal waters as part of the ritual offering.

Early in the morning, after breakfast, you will start a scenic drive from Uttarkashi to Gangotri. You will follow the Bhagirathi River through beautiful mountain valleys and charming villages. The road distance from Uttarkashi to Gangotri is about 100 km, and the trip usually takes around 3 to 4 hours each way by road, making it a full-day outing.
When you arrive at Gangotri, located at an elevation of over 3,100 m in the Garhwal Himalayas, you can visit the sacred Gangotri Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the source of the holy Ganga River.

The drive covers about 190-200 km and usually takes around 8-10 hours, depending on traffic and the condition of the mountain roads.
As you head south through the beautiful Garhwal Himalayas, you’ll pass scenic valleys, riverside areas, charming villages, and forested slopes. Take in the natural beauty and calm of the region. Along the way, you might catch views of the Mandakini River flowing through the hills. This river is a sacred tributary of the Ganga and eventually meets the Alaknanda River farther downstream.

It winds through beautiful Himalayan landscapes, with rest stops at places like Jungle Chatti, Bheembali, and Linchauli before reaching Kedarnath. This journey usually takes 6 to 8 hours, depending on your pace and fitness level.
As you climb the mountain trail, you will see pine forests, rivers, and snow-capped peaks, making the trek both spiritually and visually rewarding. Upon arriving at Kedarnath Temple, you can attend darshan and the evening aarti, enjoying the sacred atmosphere at this shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. After spending time at this sacred shrine, start your descent back to Gaurikund along the same scenic trek route through the Himalayan trail. The distance between Gaurikund and Kedarnath Temple is about 16 km one way, and pilgrims usually finish the trek in 6 to 8 hours, depending on their pace and the weather.
Once you reach Gaurikund, take a shared jeep or local taxi to Sonprayag. From there, continue your journey to Guptkashi. Enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Garhwal region, with views of rivers, forests, and mountain slopes, as you drive back. When you arrive in Guptkashi by evening, check in to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay. Take a moment to reflect on a spiritually fulfilling day.
After breakfast, check out from your hotel in Guptkashi and start your scenic drive to Joshimath via Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag. You’ll follow the Alaknanda River through beautiful Himalayan valleys. The trip to Joshimath is about 155 to 170 km from Guptkashi and usually takes 7 to 8 hours, depending on traffic and weather.
On your way, you’ll pass through Rudraprayag, where the Mandakini River meets the Alaknanda River at one of the famous Panch Prayag confluences. You’ll also see Karnaprayag, another vital river confluence, perfect for quick photo stops and snacks.
Continue your drive through the quaint towns and rolling hills of the Chamoli district, arriving in Joshimath by evening. Located at about 1,890 m above sea level, Joshimath is a sacred town with rich spiritual history and an essential stop on the Char Dham route.

The distance from Joshimath to Haridwar is about 274 to 295 km by road, and the drive usually takes 9 to 10 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions in the mountains.
During the journey, you might want to stop at Devprayag, an important town where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet to form the holy Ganga. This spot is a sacred confluence and a popular pilgrimage site. Take some photos and maybe visit briefly to enjoy the spiritual atmosphere before resuming your drive.
Continue to Rudraprayag, Srinagar (Garhwal), and Rishikesh as you make your way to Haridwar. When you arrive in Haridwar in the evening, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel, railway station, or a designated drop-off point. This marks the end of your memorable Char Dham pilgrimage.
